Setting the Stage on the Hilltop
Every project has a moment when plans move from paper to reality. For the Hilltop Retreat, that moment came as we broke ground and started shaping the foundation that would support a truly unique home. This property sits on a hilltop with sweeping views, and from the start, it called for precision and creativity in equal measure.
The home was designed as a slab-on-grade structure, meaning we prepared a flat building pad before forming and pouring the foundation. This approach delivers long-term stability and performance, especially in Prescott’s varied terrain. But what made this build stand out wasn’t just the craftsmanship—it was the engineering challenge that came with creating a custom, underground feature right beneath that slab.
Building an Underground Wine Cellar
One of the most memorable elements of this project is the completely underground wine cellar. This isn’t a simple storage room—it’s a concrete vault built into the hillside, integrated as part of the foundation system. The excavation had to be exact, the waterproofing flawless, and the concrete placement precise to ensure the vault would stand up to both time and temperature changes.
This underground wine room will maintain a naturally cool environment with minimal energy use, a perfect example of how thoughtful design and high-performance construction work together.
Key construction elements included:
- Excavation and structural forming for the concrete vault
- Integration of the vault within the slab-on-grade foundation system
- Reinforced concrete walls for long-term durability and stability
- Advanced moisture and temperature control for wine preservation
Each detail reflects the same care we put into every part of the home—combining engineering with craftsmanship to create lasting value.
Framing with Character
With the foundation in place, we turned our focus to framing. The Hilltop Retreat features tall ceilings, generous open spaces, and detailed beam work both inside and out. On the patios, exposed beams frame the views and bring a sense of warmth and structure to the outdoor living areas.
Our framing process always starts with accuracy. Proper layout, consistent load transfer, and secure beam connections are the quiet foundation of a well-built home. When those details come together, the results are visual as well as structural—clean lines, balanced proportions, and rooms that simply feel right.
While this home includes standout design features, the framing and structure follow the same standard of quality we bring to every project. Whether it’s a custom retreat like this one or a family residence downtown, the goal remains the same: to build homes that perform beautifully for decades.
Craftsmanship You Can Feel
Breaking ground is an exciting milestone, but it’s also the start of countless precise steps that define the home’s performance. Every pour, every beam, every joint plays a role in how the finished home will live and feel. At RES Contracting, we approach this phase with the same focus we bring to energy systems, insulation, and design—because every layer matters.
Our work on the Hilltop Retreat shows how technical detail and creative design come together. From the underground wine vault to the last ridge beam, this project reflects what custom building is all about: tailoring every part of the home to fit the site, the design, and the homeowner’s vision.
Building Tomorrow’s Homes Today
